Most boilers have a realistic working life of 10 to 15 years. Beyond that point, efficiency drops, spare parts become harder to source, and the risk of a sudden, expensive breakdown — often in the depths of winter — rises sharply.
One repair in several years is normal wear and tear. Two or more callouts in a single winter is a strong signal the boiler is on its way out. At some point, the cumulative cost of repairs outweighs simply replacing the unit.
If your gas usage habits haven't changed but your bills are creeping up, your boiler may be losing efficiency. Modern condensing combi boilers can be significantly more efficient than units installed even 10 years ago.
"Kettling" (a rumbling or banging sound, often caused by limescale or sludge build-up), persistent whistling, or clanking are all signs of a boiler under strain. Sometimes a power flush resolves this; other times it signals a system nearing the end of its life.
This is the one sign you should never ignore. A healthy gas flame burns blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate incomplete combustion and a risk of carbon monoxide production. If you see a yellow flame, turn the boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.
Radiators that take a long time to heat up, or hot water that runs out quickly, can point to a boiler (or system) that's struggling to keep up with demand — sometimes fixable, sometimes a sign the boiler is undersized or failing.
